CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 17, 2019) - Hickory Tavern’s newest menu addition is not only delicious but benefits a great cause. ‘Merica’s Burger is not your typical burger. Featuring fresh ground beef topped with smoked gouda mac and cheese, for every ‘Merica’s Burger sold, $1 will be donated to The Independence Fund. The Independence Fund builds customizable wheelchairs for wounded veterans and, on average, each customizable chair costs $16,000 to build.

“The Independence Fund is all about helping our nation’s wounded veterans regain their independence and we are thrilled to partner with Hickory Tavern to continue serving those who have given so much to our country,” said Sara Verardo, CEO of The Independence Fund. “With each purchase of the ‘Merica’s Burger, a Hickory Tavern guest will be helping to provide an all-terrain tracked wheelchair to a catastrophically wounded veteran.”

The Independence Fund is based in Charlotte, N.C. and is the eighth largest military non-profit organization in the nation, serving veterans in all areas of the country. To date, The Independence Fund has built 2,400 all-terrain wheelchairs for veterans since 2007. For Charlotte-based Hickory Tavern, finding an organization to partner with that was also local was key.

“Burgers have always been a staple item at Hickory Tavern since the opening of our doors in 1997. The Tavern Burger is one of the more popular items on the menu, with Hickory Tavern proudly selling over 92,000 in 2018,” said Hickory Tavern President and Chief Executive Officer, Paul Baldasaro. “We feel confident that ‘Merica’s Burger will have similar success and Hickory Tavern and its’ guests can truly make a difference with The Independence Fund and their efforts with disabled veterans.”

‘Merica’s Burger is made of 100 percent all American ground beef, topped with smoked gouda mac and cheese served au gratin style with crispy bacon, grilled fresh tomato and served on a toasted, buttered bun. Chow down on ‘Merica’s Burger and a side for $11.79. It will be available at all Hickory Tavern locations from April 22, 2019, through the spring of 2020. Hickory Tavern will be hosting an official launch party at their Ballantyne location Friday, April 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to promote the new burger and their partnership with The Independence Fund. Representatives from The Independence Fund will be on site, along with veterans and one of their all-terrain tracked wheelchairs.
